The Gibbs-Donnan effect arrises when two fluid compartments containing a mixture of permeable and impermeable charged ions are separated by a semipermeable membrane. In order for the Gibbs-Donnan effect to emerge there must be an unequal charge distribution of impermeable ions across the membrane.
